Chocolá
“More than 2,000 years ago, the Olmecs discovered the benefits and joy of cacao and chocolate. A thousand years later, the Mayans followed suit and fell in love with it. It became their currency; their universal medicine; the beverage of their royalty; the food of their gods.
At the center of the Mayan Empire was a city named Chocolá, now located in southern Guatemala. Although little is known about this ancient town, Chocolá was strategically located in the heart of the cacao producing region of the Empire. The city flourished between 600 and 1200 A.D. in parallel to the great Mayan cities of the North, including Tikal, El Mirador and Kaminal Juyú. Prized for its high quality, Chocolá was also one of the primary sources of cacao for Aztec rulers in northern Tenochitlan, today what is known as Mexico City.
As history goes, the original Mayan drink and cacao beans traveled to Europe in the hands of Keqchi Indians in 1583. After combining it with sugar, the Royal court of Spain and other European Courts fell in love with the luscious, energizing, chocolate drink. After many years of discovery and refinement, Europeans developed the drink in what we know now as chocolate bar.
We are proud to bring you Chocolá. A chocolate inspired in the ancient Mayan traditions and the best of contemporary chocolate making. We blend in flavors from Guatemala and its Mayan and colonial ancestry, such as tropical fruits, macadamia nuts, coffee, and lightly roasted Guatemalan grown cacao beans. Welcome to Chocolá, and make a trip back to where it all began.
